What Are Neurotoxins and How Do They Work?
Neurotoxins, or “Tox” as we call them at NIMS Medspa, have the active ingredient botulinum toxin A in them. This inhibits communication between your nerves and muscles, preventing targeted muscles from contracting. This diminishes the appearance of wrinkles, which is initially caused by repetitive muscle actions, such as frowning or squinting.
By preventing a lot of muscle contractions in certain areas, neurotoxin use leads to a more youthful and refreshed appearance for the skin. We often use them on dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are forehead lines, crow’s feet around the eyes, and frown lines between the eyebrows.
Types of Neurotoxins

Jeuveau
Unlike some other neurotoxins, Jeuveau is specifically indicated for treatment of glabellar lines, also called frown lines. It’s known to produce fast results, in contrast with some other neurotoxins that can take a few days to start showing a difference.
Botox
Botox is one of the oldest aesthetic treatments, trusted by people everywhere since it was FDA-approved in 1989 to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Botox is very versatile with the ability to treat lines on the forehead and around the nose, mouth, and lips. It’s also indicated for non-aesthetic uses with the ability to treat migraines and help with the relaxation of the jaw.
Dysport
Newer to the market than Botox, Dysport is used in the same areas as Botox. Unlike Jeuveau and similar neurotoxins, it’s treatment uses are not limited to specific lines and wrinkles. Many people may end up choosing Dysport over Botox because it is often a little more cost-effective.
Daxxify
Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm) is the newest addition to the lineup of FDA-approved neurotoxins, specifically designed for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe glabellar lines in adults. Daxxify allows for a longer duration of effect compared to other neurotoxins.

Neurotoxins vs. Dermal Fillers: What’s the Difference?
Neurotoxins and dermal fillers are both popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures, each serving distinct functions and purposes.
However, neurotoxins like Jeuveau, Dysport, and Botox function by temporarily immobilizing muscles in specific facial areas. This effectively reduces wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle actions such as squinting or frowning.
In contrast, dermal fillers involve injecting substances into the deeper layers of the skin to augment volume and smooth out wrinkles or folds. They can also enhance facial features like lips or cheeks. Typically containing substances such as hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite, which naturally occur in the body, dermal fillers create a plumping effect.
